Piping and Drumming:
The world renowned City of Washington Pipe Band - The City of Washington Pipe Band - This is a performance you don't want to miss! In 2001 the band made the finals in the World Championships and took 12th overall! The City of Washington Pipe Band proudly carries forward with the musical traditions of all its roots. These include the rudimentary drum and bugle percussion style of John Bosworth; the fiddle and folk traditions learned from Bonnie Rideout; and the original compositions of Charlie Glendinning. And like the U.S. Air Force Pipe Band a half-century ago, the City of Washington Pipe Band brings all the power and glory of the modern pipe band to the Nation's Capital in performances ranging from the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the Mall to the Concert Hall of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
The MacMillan Pipe Band - The MacMillan Pipe Band was organized as the Alumni Pipe Band to mark the 40th Anniversary of the Rockville High School Pipe Band during the 33rd Annual National Capital Area Scottish Festival in May of 2001. The band is a home for the alumni of the two schools (Rockville and Peary), and an organization for recent pipe band graduates to join. It is also another option for other area pipers and drummers who may wish to join. The MacMillan Pipe Band will continue to honor the memory of D.B. MacMillan while celebrating two Schools, One Tradition.
The Rockville High School Pipe Band - the future of Scottish Piping and Drumming lives on in these youngsters! They are amazing! Come on out and cheer them on!
Ceilidh Music:
Bonnie Rideout, Scottish Fiddle
On stages from Scotland’s Edinburgh International Festival to America’s Kennedy Center, Bonnie Rideout’s unique style of Scottish fiddling has charmed audiences across the globe. Bonnie has been featured on the BBC, CBS, NPR’s Performance Today, and the Morning Edition. She has also consistently played on NPR’s The Thistle and Shamrock. In addition to authoring seven music books for Mel Bay Publishing Company, Bonnie has recorded over thirteen solo albums and appeared as a guest musician on dozens of CDs with Sony, BMG, Time Life, Ryco Disc, Dorian, Rounder Records, and Maggie’s Music. In 2003, she incorporated her own record label, Tulloch Music, Ltd. Her Scottish Christmas CD became a New York Times “Top Ten Holiday Best Seller”. Its success prompted a touring show that has sold out halls across North America for over a decade. Her popular recording, Gi’Me Elbow Room received the coveted Parent’s Choice Gold Award. She has received numerous Washington Area Music Association “WHAMMY” awards every year since 1994. In 2007, the Mel Bay Publishing Company credited Bonnie as one of America’s top ten most influential traditional fiddlers of the 20th century.
Ms. Rideout is the only American to hold the honor of representing Scottish fiddle music at the prestigious Edinburgh International Festival. She is the first woman to hold the national Scottish fiddle title and the youngest to have garnered the U.S. Championship, winning it for three consecutive years. Thereafter, Bonnie discontinued competing to become an adjudicator and professional recording artist and has maintained a consistently high profile in the International Celtic music scene for almost thirty years.
Sligo Creek is an Acoustic Irish/Scottish/American Folk Band based in Maryland. With over 20 years of performing experience in various acts, the members of Sligo Creek have sought to put together a band with two very specific goals:
First, to play the very best of the best, as far as traditional folk music is concerned.
Secondly, to play it in a way that the Average Joe in the audience will come away with a new appreciation for, or introduction to, what is arguably some of the best music ever written.
Ballads that are sung with emotion; Powerful Sea Shanties; Upbeat Stories and Classic Melodies sung the way they were meant to be. Thats Sligo Creek.
And more! Stay tuned!
